In our study to date, John has had a stern warning to the Gnostics and the heresy they were seeking to teach. And evidently there were some believers who were saying they believed one thing and yet their lifestyles seemed to suggest something completely different. John very clearly points out that those who walk in fellowship with God will walk in the light of His Word. And those who do not live in fellowship with God will walk in darkness.  I John 1:6-7 6 "If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin."

Light and Darkness is determined by how we deal with sin in our lives. Last week we began to look at how desensitized our world today has become to confessing and taking responsibility for sin in our lives. As we said last week, the Scripture tells us in the last days good will be called evil and evil called good. Isaiah 5:20 says, "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter." Today we see this very thing happening before our eyes. We justify our sins and dismiss its wrongness while we criticize those who live righteously around us as those who are intolerant. We consistently allow sin to remain in our lives and very seldom do we demonstrate repentance in our lives especially not publicly as a sign to Satan and his evil forces we mean business choosing to live for God.

So how have we arrived at mishandling sin in our lives? Interestingly enough John, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit writes for us how we can choose to deal with our sin. Let’s read our focal passages for today and then see the three choices John outlines for us here about how to deal with our sin. I John 1:5-2:6.
